Latex care can look mysterious because the material behaves unlike ordinary fabric. The essentials are straightforward: avoid incompatible substances, keep stress away from weak points and never store a garment damp or sunlit.
Before you dress
Check the garment for small tears, lifting seams and stressed zip ends. Remove jewellery that can snag and file rough nails. Prepare a clean area so the piece never has to touch a dusty floor.
Use the dressing method recommended by the maker. Untreated pieces may need talc or a compatible lubricant; chlorinated pieces often need less help. Gather long sections and ease them on gradually with flat hands.
During wear
- Avoid oil-based lotions, perfumes and lubricants where they may contact the latex.
- Keep away from open flames, high heat and prolonged direct sun.
- Lift and sit carefully around rough stone, unfinished wood and sharp furniture edges.
- Support the fabric around a zip instead of yanking the slider.
- Take a break if you overheat or the garment affects breathing, circulation or sensation.
Wash and dry
Wash after wear using lukewarm water and a mild latex-compatible cleaner. Do not put latex in a washing machine or tumble dryer. Rinse thoroughly, drain without wringing and dry away from direct heat. Turn the garment so both surfaces dry completely.
Polish only with a product intended for latex. If shine is not important, clean and dry is enough.
Store with fewer surprises
Keep latex cool, dark and dry. Separate light colours from darker ones, avoid unknown metals and fold loosely where hanging would stretch the garment. A breathable garment cover can protect from light, but follow the maker’s advice for long-term storage.
The best routine is the one you repeat immediately after each wear. Tomorrow’s perfect outfit begins with tonight’s ten minutes of care.
