A practical routine for washing, drying, polishing and protecting latex garments from common sources of damage.
Wash promptly and gently
Follow the garment maker’s instructions first because finishes, trims and adhesives vary. In general, wash latex by hand in lukewarm water with a small amount of compatible cleaner. Avoid bleach, strong detergent, dry cleaning and ordinary machine cycles.
Clean both sides after wear to remove perspiration, dressing aid and polish. Rinse thoroughly so that residue does not remain against the material.
Dry both sides completely
Let water drain and pat carefully with a soft, lint-free towel if the manufacturer permits it. Turn the garment so both surfaces can dry. Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators, hairdryers and open flames.
Do not store latex while it is damp. Trapped moisture can produce odour and make surfaces stick together.
Use only compatible products
Apply a latex-safe polish when you want a glossy finish, and use only the dressing aid recommended for the garment. Oils, petroleum jelly and oil-based lubricants can weaken natural latex.
Be cautious with powders too. Garment makers may recommend different products depending on the finish and intended storage method. When uncertain, ask before applying anything new.
Protect it in storage
Store latex somewhere cool, dry and dark. Keep it away from sharp objects and metals such as copper, brass and bronze, which can cause permanent stains. Separate pale colours from dark or strongly coloured pieces when advised because pigments may transfer.
Avoid tight folds and stress on glued seams. Some garments suit a wide padded hanger; others are better stored flat. Care takes a little time, but it protects both the finish and the investment.
