How to buy, wear, clean and store your first latex pieces with confidence.

Choose an approachable first piece

Gloves, a skirt, shorts or a simple top are easier first purchases than a made-to-measure catsuit. Check the maker’s measurement guide rather than ordering your usual clothing size. Latex stretches, but too much strain shortens its life and feels uncomfortable.

Dress slowly

Remove jewellery and check nails for rough edges. Use the dressing aid recommended by the manufacturer, support the garment with open hands and work gradually. Never pull hard on one seam or narrow edge. Stop if you feel numbness, pain, dizziness, overheating or difficulty breathing.

Clean after wear

Follow the maker’s instructions. In general, hand-wash promptly in lukewarm water with a suitable mild cleaner, rinse thoroughly and let the garment dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Clean the inside as carefully as the outside. Only apply compatible polish when the item is clean.

Store it thoughtfully

Keep latex cool, dry and dark, away from oils, solvents, copper, brass and sharp objects that may stain or damage it. Separate pale colours from darker garments if the maker advises it. A little time spent on care protects both the finish and your investment.

Natural-rubber latex can cause allergic reactions. If you know or suspect you have a latex allergy, do not wear it; seek appropriate medical advice rather than testing the reaction yourself.
